An Overview of Web Design and Web Development

Web design and web development are virtually inseparable in today’s digital business environment. A look at Google Analytics will prove that businesses are searching both simultaneously. Hence, digital marketing and web development agencies portray their services by closely clubbing the two together.

However, in spite of this trend, web design and web development are two different entities that require completely different skill sets to create. Here is a look at both individually in some detail.

Web Design

Web designers start with clients objectives in mind and then go on to creating the website’s architecture and hierarchy. The goal here is to structure an attractive site that offers a high level of user experience. Some of the design principles are –

  • Balance – In website design there is heavy and light elements in terms of colour and shade and using both in the correct proportion leads to a balanced design.
  • Contrast – In the theory of colour, contrasting colours are placed at opposite ends of a colour wheel. Designers are well conversant with this aspect and utilise contrast to draw attention of the visitors to certain sections of a site.
  • Emphasis – This is a design principle where certain critical elements of a web page are highlighted. It is necessary to be selective as too many highlighted portions take away the importance from these sections.

Web Development

After the designers have designed a website in its rudimentary form, the developers also known as programmers take the basics so created and develop a fully functional website. In the initial stages, a designed website is like a picture that cannot interact with anything else. In short it is totally static. Developers then split output of the designers into small workable parts and use HTML or one of the dynamic programming languages such as PHP to develop these components of website pages.

Other methods frequently used by developers include WordPress, Joomla, and Content Management System (CMS) that helps clients update and maintain their websites whenever required. Developers also change the fixed layouts into an active and live website with the help of content sliders, images, active state for links, call to action buttons and other interactive elements.

These are some of the more crucial aspects of web design and development.
